1Samuel 17:34-37 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,

35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”

David’s paradigm in facing Saul and the Giant was his RELATIONSHIP with God.

1Samuel 17:45-47 45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

David’s relationship with God gave him both CONFIDENCE to face and VICTORY over his challenges.

David INVESTED in and developed His relationship with God.

1Samuel 13:14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.” (Ref. Acts 13:22)

Eternal life is a RELATIONSHIP with God, not the product of religion.

John 17:3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Mark 12:30-31 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

The orientation of Jesus’ message was RELATIONAL.

Ways to INVEST in your relationship with God:

Time and Talents:

  1. By spending TIME with God reading the BIBLE, prayer, and praise. (Ref. Joshua 1:8; Matthew 4:4 ; Colossians 4:2; 1Timothy 2:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Philippians 4:4-6; Psalm 150)

  1. By faithful OBEDIENCE (doing, applying) to God’s word, written and revealed. (Ref. James 1:22; 2:14-26; Matthew 7:24-29; Hebrews 5:12-14; 2Timothy 3:16-17; 1Timothy 2:15; Galatians 5:25; Romans 8:14)

  1. By being the CHURCH; the assembling together of God’s people for worship, mission, and sharing life together (aka: fellowship). (Hebrews 10:23-25; 1Peter 4:8-10; Romans 12:3-16; 14:19, 15:1-2 Ephesians 4:11-16)

  2. By SHARING the faith with others. (Ref. Philemon 1:6; Matthew 28:18-20; 2Timothy 4:2; 1Peter 3:15; Matthew 5:16; Mark 16:15)

Wealth:

  1. By honoring God with our TITHES and OFFERINGS. (Ref. Deuteronomy 14:23; Matthew 19-21, 32-33; 23:23; 2Corinthians 8:7, 9:6-15; Malachi 3:8-12;  Proverbs 3:9-10; James 5:1-6; 1Timothy 5:17-18; 1Corinthians 9:1-14)

  1. By being GENEROUS to bless others. (Ref. Matthew 6:1-4; 2Corinthians 8:1-7, 9:6-15; Proverbs 11:25, 22:9; 1Timothy 6:17-19)

  1. By spending money on things that will STRENGTHEN spiritually (Bibles, devotionals, christian music & movies, etc.).

Our relationship with Jesus, becomes our LIFE and VICTORY. (Ref. Colossians 3:4)

Romans 8:31-32, 37 31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
