Recovery Part 2

Recovery Part 2

EVERYONE has issues and we all need RECOVERY.

Philippians 3:4-6 4 If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.

Outwardly, by appearance, Paul looked GOOD.

Romans 7:14-23 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

Doing what I don’t want to do is evidence of ENSLAVEMENT.

17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

How we choose to handle an issue determines what POWER I give it in my life.

This scripture isn’t an EXCUSE to live in sin, because we’re powerless to do otherwise. It is an ACKNOWLEDGMENT of the condition/state we are in, having surrendered control of our life to something/someone else.

18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

There comes a point in our life where unrepented of habits, mindsets, and attitudes become our MASTER.

21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members.

There can come a point where we are FLESH ruled (even as a believer in God), where our desires are in charge of our life (thoughts, feelings, attitudes, words, and actions).

The phrase, “CARNAL Christian” (from latin), means Flesh Ruled Christian.

24 What a wretched man I am!

Paul is ADMITTING and CONFESSING.

Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Paul declares JESUS to be the only way.

Romans 10:11-13  11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

SAVED (GK: Sozo) –  to save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction,  to make well, heal, restore to health

SHALOM (Heb) – Wholeness, Completeness, Soundness, Stability, Wellness, Tranquility, Peace, Prosperity, Safety

Recovery Part 1

Recovery Part 1

RECOVERYrestoration or return to any former, normal, and better state; the action or process of regaining possession or control of something stolen or lost.

EVERYONE has issues and we all need RECOVERY.

1 John 5:17 All wrongdoing is sin

SIN = Missing the bullseye; less than God’s best; less than perfect.

Romans 3:21 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

The first step is to stop DENYING and start ADMITTING.

Proverbs 28:13 Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

How we choose to respond determines the OUTCOME.

Proverbs 5:21-23 21 For your ways are in full view of the Lord,

and he examines all your paths.

22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them;

the cords of their sins hold them fast.

23 For lack of discipline they will die,

led astray by their own great folly.

Recovery is a process and takes…

  1. COMMITMENT.

  1. TIME.

  1. RESOURCES.

  1. WORK.

  1. HELP.

But is starts with CONFESSION.

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

Masterpiece Part 2

Masterpiece Part 2

Ephesians 2:8-10  8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

We are one PART of a whole GREATER masterpiece.

BIG WHEEL Pride – Obsession/Fixation on all we are, all we have, all we can do, how we measure up (AKA: Arrogance).

WORM Pride – Obsession/Fixation on all we are not, all we don’t have, all we can’t do, how we don’t measure up (AKA: Self-Debasing, false humility).

1 Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?

1 Peter 2:5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

All of us TOGETHER make the full Masterpiece. (1Corinthians 12:12-27)

The purpose of the Masterpiece is not how great and special WE are, but how great and special GOD is.

Ephesians 4:11-16 11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. 15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

The masterpiece is not COMPLETE if it is missing your part.

Romans 12:4-5 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

  1. “we are God’s handiwork”…

Handiwork – (GK Poiema) workmanship, something produced, a MASTERPIECE, a work of art,

Every person is like a beautiful tapestry crafted and WOVEN together by the Master Artist.

Psalm 139:13-16 13 For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

   your works are wonderful,

   I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you

when I was made in the secret place,

when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;

all the days ordained for me were written in your book

before one of them came to be.

Our worth is INTRINSIC because we are the work of God.

  1. created in Christ Jesus” ….

Created – (GK Ktizo) to shape, form, completely change or transform; to make HABITABLE.

1Corinthians 6:19-20 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;  you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

  1. prepared in advance for us for us to do”…

God made us special FOR something special.

As God’s temple, the point of our lives is HIS glory and pleasure not our own.

Sherlock Part 4

Sherlock Part 4

Jesus is a COME as you are God, but not a STAY as you are God.

He LOVES you too much to let you stay the way you are.

Jesus expects CHANGE (repentance).

Matthew 4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

Luke 8:35-39 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

Don’t be surprised when the work of God in your life is undeniable, but the people REJECT it .

They are not sending you away, they are sending JESUS away.

38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

It’s not who you were BEFORE without Jesus, it’s who you are NOW with Jesus.

Is there enough EVIDENCE of God’s presence and activity in your life to incriminate you as a follower of Jesus?

Ephesians 5:1-2 1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

We are to be IMITATORS of God, not this broken world (Romans 12:1-2)

2Corinthians 2:14-16 14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life.

We are to be the fragrant aroma of JESUS.

1Peter 2:11-12 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Matthew 5:14-16 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

By our words, deeds, and attitudes, are we people’s REASON or EXCUSE?

Titus 1:16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
Ref. 1Corinthians 9:24-27; Colossians 4:2-6; Galatians 2:20; Romans 1:16; Titus 1:15-16, 2:11-14

Sherlock Part 3

We are the agent.
Kingdom Forensic Field Agent

Every Christian is a Kingdom Forensic FIELD Agent (KFFA).

People of the world are BLIND to the evidence of Jesus in their life and world.

2Corinthians 4:4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

As KFFA (lights of the world) we are reflecting God’s light to REVEAL the truth that others cannot see.

Ephesians 5:8-13 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.

As KFFA we enter the scene and OBSERVE and REPORT.

We look for evidence of GOD. God is…

  • Jesus/God is TRUTH (John 14:6; 17:17)
  • Jesus/God is LIFE (John 14:6)
  • God is LOVE (1John 4:8)
  • God is PEACE (1Corinthians 14:33)
  • God is PROVIDER (Genesis 22:14)
  • God is HEALER (Exodus 15:26)
  • God is FULFILLMENT (John 10:10)
  • God is FREEDOM and Victory (Psalm 3:8; Exodus 17:10-15)
  • God is RIGHTEOUS (Psalm 116:5)
  • God is GOOD (Mark 10:18)
  • God is JOY, kindness, patience (Galatians 5:22-23)

These are the FINGERPRINTS of God in any situation.

We look for evidence of SATAN.

  • ADVERSARY (1 Peter 5:8)
  • ACCUSER (Revelation 12:10)
  • ENEMY (Matthew 13:39)
  • EVIL (John 17:15)
  • LIAR (John 8:44)
  • TEMPTER (Matthew 4:3)
  • THIEF (John 10:10)
  • SICKNESS (Matthew 17:14-18)
  • DECEIVER (Revelation 12:9)
  • DESTROYER (1Peter 5:8)
  • DARKNESS (Acts 26:18)
  • IMPURITY (Matthew 10:1)
  • FEAR (2Timothy 1:7)
  • SIN (1John 3:8)
  • PRIDE (Isaiah 14:12-15)

We look for the evidence of DEPRAVITY(Spiritual, Physical, Mental, Relational, Moral).

There are times where circumstances are NEITHER the work of God nor work of the devil, but are the result of the brokenness in this world and man’s free will.

Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light

Love Bankruptcy Part 1

March 7, 2017 in Sermon Notes, Video

Love Bankruptcy: Keeping your relationships in the black (Part 1)

Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

What you plant/INVEST is what will grow, MULTIPLIED times over.

2Corinthians 8:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

Rules of the Love Bank:

  1. When the Love bank is above zero we feel love TOWARD and feel loved FROM our spouse.

  1. The higher the balance above zero, the more “in love” you FEEL.

  1. ZERO balance begins the feelings of “I don’t love this person” or “I don’t FEEL in love with this person” or “loved by this person”.

  1. When the love bank is BELOW zero we feel no love toward and no love from our spouse. The lower the balance drops below zero, the more “out of love” you feel, until you hit bankruptcy where you no longer love that person. There is still HOPE for recovery, bankruptcy doesn’t kill the relationship, but it will take a lot of hard work and extra effort from both parties.

  1. There is a threshold of TOLERANCE above and below zero balance where you “know” you love the person and operate out of commitment, but the “feelings” of love and passion are nominal if present at all.

  1. It’s NORMAL for relationships to have seasons of highs and lows, strong feelings and nominal feelings, but it’s the consistent withdrawals that take that love bank below zero and beyond the threshold of tolerance in the negative balance to the point of bankruptcy.

It’s up to you! We’ll give you TOOLS, but you must do the WORK.

Romans 13:8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

There is HOPE!

1Corinthians 13:4-8 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  8 Love never fails.

If we will pursue, plant, and work with and toward love, then we CANNOT fail.

Application: On a scale of -10 to +10 you and your spouse RATE your own love bank.

We are to REFLECT God and His light in the world.

EVERY Christian has been recruited by Jesus to join in His MISSION.

Matthew 28:18-20 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Mark 16:15 15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Colossians 4:5 Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity

Every Christian is a Kingdom Forensic FIELD Agent (KFFA).

Matthew 5:14-16 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others…

Light – REVEALS (makes visible) clearly what was hidden or obscured by darkness.

It ILLUMINATES; brings understanding where there was ignorance (no understanding).

It WARMS what was cold.

It makes SOFT what was once hard.

A WITNESS makes known what they’ve experienced (seen, heard, touched, tasted, smelled).

1 John 1:1-5 1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

Our light doesn’t originate with us, it is a REFLECTION of God’s light through us.

Modern Family Part 4

February 27, 2017 in Sermon Notes, Video

Modern Family Part 4

Luke 17:1 Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come…”

Everyone will have to deal with hurt/OFFENSE in every area of life; family, friendship, church, work, etc.

Anger will be a REALITY, but there is a Jesus way to handling it.

Ephesians 4:26-27 26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.

To hold onto anger gives satan a foothold and poisons us with BITTERNESS.

Hebrews 12:15  See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
??

Bitterness…

  • Causes TROUBLE
  • DEFILES many (it’s CONTAGIOUS)
  • Can cause us and others to MISS the GRACE of God. (James 1:14-15)

God’s plan for conflict RESOLUTION:

  1. Commit yourself to walking in LOVE and not being EASILY OFFENDED.  (Galatians 5:22-23; 1Corinthians 13:4-8; Proverbs 19:11)

  1. Commit YOURSELF to open, honest, humble, loving communication. (Ephesians 4:1-6; Ephesians 4:15)

  1.  Check YOUR own heart/motives. (Is it for restoration or retaliation?) (Galatians 6:1)

  2. Go to the person PRIVATELY (not other people, not via text, email, social media).

– If you know someone is offended with YOU. (Matthew 5:24-25)

– If YOU have and offense with another person. (Matthew 18:15-17)

  1. If dealing with a Christian and there is no repentance, take 1 or 2 mature Christians to meet with them to address the issues.

  1.  If dealing with a Christian and still no repentance, take to church LEADERSHIP.

  1. ACCEPT repentance. (Matthew 18:21-22)

  2. Choose to FORGIVE, no matter what their response.  (Matthew 6:9-15)

  1. Don’t confuse forgiveness or repentance with RESTORATION.

  • Restoration is a PROCESS and a RESULT

  • By FORGIVING I provide building materials.

  • By REPENTING they provide building materials.

There is no restoration without FORGIVENESS and REPENTANCE.

2Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
